When music is written down, it is written on a set or sets of 5 even lines. We call a set of these 5 evenly spaced lines a “Staff“.
Below is an illustration of a “Staff“.
The sounds that we play we call “Notes“. We write these “Notes” on the staff.
Below is an example of what these “Notes” look like alone.
“Notes” can be low or high. In fact, we have 88 common notes from low to high. With so many “Notes“, we need to see how high or low the notes are. The first way we see this is with something called a “Clef” A “Clef” at the beginning of a “Staff” tells us how high or low the “Notes” are on the “Staff“.
There are 2 very common “Clefs” that we want to know.
One “Clef” is the “Treble Clef“. The “Treble Clef” is illustrated below.
Another “Clef” is the “Bass Clef“. The “Bass Clef” is illustrated below.
